Carol Anderson, the author of “White Rage”, claims the phenomenon of white resentment will negatively impact American education

Anderson’s recent publication “White Rage” details the history of the United States’ treatment of people of color, particularly children, emphasizing how many opportunities were denied to citizens based on their skin color.

Although this a topic that has been delved into by a variety of historians and civil rights activists, Anderson highlights historical events where the United States government chose racist policies over inclusive ones, actually harming itself in some instances.

A prime example Anderson mentions is the U.S military desegregation. When the U.S was losing against Korea due to a lack of soldiers, the government finally agreed to allow people of color to join the army.

Anderson described the U.S’s reluctance to promote equality in various industries self-damaging and problematic in the long-term, like the old adage “cut your nose off and spite your face”.

Anderson describes white resentment as when whites feel like victims because they believe institutions aim to be “politically correct” and include people of color over whites even if they are unqualified, rather than selecting a person of color due to their own personal merits and capabilities.

Trump’s call to investigate “reverse discrimination” in colleges’ admissions policy a clear example, Anderson says

Over the summer, Trump called for an investigation into college admissions practicing “reverse discrimination” – selecting candidates of color over white students deliberately.

Student Abigail Fisher’s case was promoted heavily by the Trump administration as an example, a case which unfortunately promoted the ever-growing myth among Trump supporters that minorities are “stealing” the places of more qualified white students.

Fisher claimed that she was rejected from Texas University because she was white, rather than the fact that she did not meet the educational requirements (not at the top of her graduating class).
