iCreate vs. iConsumption January 3, 2012 6:00 pm

iCreate vs. iConsumption

Many argue that the iPad is the premiere consumption device at this time but it isn’t very good at creating. Is that accurate? I tend to believe that the iPad is an amazingly creative device and the user is the only limit for the device. Creating on the iPad is different but it is an effective creation device. The very nature of the device itself and how we interface with it provide for a uniquely creative environment. Effectively creating on [...]

Top Apps for Professional Development

I was recently asked to lead a professional development session for a school that is starting to roll out iOS devices for teachers and students. Over the course of the year, staff at this school will be receiving a significant amount of professional development to help them better utilize the technology that is available to them. The focus of my session was iOS Apps for professional development. I scrolled through my iPad and made a list of the Apps that I use [...]

Everyday, it seems like more and more companies are coming up with innovative accessories to make iOS devices more fun and educational at the same time. With so many available, it is difficult to know what is good or not so good. Luckily, Jonathan Nalder has started to review some of these iOS apps and accessories from an educator’s standpoint. Giving Thanks for Apps that Assist November 23, 2011 12:46 am

Giving Thanks for Apps that Assist

A colleague of mine recently asked me to share my top ten favorite apps for “Special Education in the Inclusive Classroom”, which is actually something that I am asked to do quite often. Unfortunately, that list does not exist. In the realm of using technology as assistive technology for individuals with special needs, it is extremely important that it be about the individual. What are the student’s strengths, weaknesses, and specific needs? What environment is he/she working in? What task [...]

Using Popplet.com to Visualize School Projects August 2, 2011 8:35 am

Using Popplet.com to Visualize School Projects

I’m always on the lookout for new ways to create, design, and visualize. The presentation tool Prezi.com has always been a unique way to create whiz-bang visuals for professional development conferences or workshops, and has a nice way of drawing the viewers in. Voicethread.com is also one of those unique tools that educators have latched on to for lots of different authentic purposes. I’ve been ready for something new. And now comes Popplet.com. Popplet is like a cross between Prezi, [...]

Circle Me Up: Exploring Circles in Google+ July 6, 2011 10:34 pm

Circle Me Up: Exploring Circles in Google+

We’ve added a few new verbs to the English lexicon in the past few years: first, we began to “friend” people. Then we began to “follow” people. Here is another one: “circle me.” One of the distinct advantages Google+ has over social networks such as Facebook and Twitter is the ability to precisely communicate with groups of people. Google calls it “targeted sharing.” While this is possible in Facebook it’s rather cumbersome and clunky. Twitter relies on hashtags which work [...]

App Review: iChromy June 6, 2011 9:53 pm

App Review: iChromy

Chrome has been my primary browser for nearly three years. I love the omni box, lightening load times, and the tabbed browsing. On my iOS devices, however, I have been forced to use Safari– until now. On May 26 the social bookmarking website Diigo announced that they were launching a Chrome-inspired browser for the iPad. iChromy looks and feels a lot like the Chrome browser including tabbed browsing and an omni box. The announcement by Diigo highlighted some of the key features [...]
